Google's Top Searches of 2010 - Malaysia

Google has announced its annual Zeitgeist, a look at 2010 through the collective eyes of the world on the web. The 2010 Year-End Zeitgeist offers a unique perspective on the year's major events and hottest trends based on global searches, as well as searches conducted in Malaysia on google.com.my

When it comes to Malaysia's fascination with the Proton Inspira, not even Apple’s iPad and the Greatest Show on Earth come close to the national car manufacturer’s Mitsubishi Lancer lookalike, which was launched in November. The fastest rising searches of 2010 also showed Malaysians going online for a variety of reasons, from checking out Indonesian drama Benci Bilang Cinta and spending time interacting via Facebook to looking for the best deals in town on mudah.com.my and staying up-to-date with the latest news on Utusan. They also kept their reflexes sharp playing online games on Didi games and kept an eye out for singing teen sensation Justin Bieber.

He may not be well-known in most parts of the world, but local fans of Swedish/Lebanese singer Maher Zain ranked him ahead of Bieber and Indonesia’s scandal-plagued Luna Maya on the fastest rising people list. David Villa, who scored five goals to help Spain win the 2010 World Cup, also proved a winner in the fastest rising World Cup players Top-10, pushing Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Brazil’s Ronaldinho to second and third place, respectively.

Bahasa Malaysia searches on google.com.my also proved extremely popular. For instance, searches for ‘tokek’ (tokay gecko) pushed the term to No.1 on the fastest rising local headlines list after news reports stated that its meat could fetch up to RM1million per kg in the overseas market and possibly be used as a cure for HIV/AIDS. Malaysians were also looking to enjoy financial freedom of the more regular variety, however, and placed ‘how to start a business’ at the top of their ‘bagaimana...’ fastest rising list

On the local movie scene, a surprise in the form of romantic drama Dear John proved more popular that other bigger Hollywood offerings, but to no one’s surprise, Endthiran, the biggest and most expensive Tamil movie ever, topped the fastest rising Indian movie list. Fans of Taiwanese drama Calling for Love also drove their favourite show to the head of the fastest rising Chinese search list in front of actresses Stephy and Ady as well as Chinese video hosting service Youku.
