Samsung Galaxy Nexus Coming!!!!!!

Well, now that Apple has announced the iPhone 4S, there’s only one other flagship on the horizon that people are eagerly anticipating and that’s the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Codenamed “Nexus Prime,” the Galaxy Nexus is a phone we have scooped on numerous occasions, and now we can paint a complete picture of the device thanks to new information from a trusted source. Here’s what Samsung and Google will unveil next Tuesday:

  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 9mm thin
  • 4.65-inch 1280 x 720-pixel Super AMOLED HD with curved glass
  • TI OMAP 4460 dual-core Cortex A9 processor clocked at 1.2GHz
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 32GB of built-in storage
  • 5-megapixel camera on the back, 1.3-megapixel in the front
  • 1080p HD video capture support
  • LTE/HSPA depending on carrier
  • Wi-Fi a/b/g/n
  • NFC
  • 1,750 mAh battery

We have confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be a pure Google Experience device without any third-party UI or modifications, so no TouchWiz on this one, guys. Also, one notable feature of Ice Cream Sandwich? The ability to monitor each app’s data usage on the device. Lastly, we’re still hearing that the Galaxy Nexus will be a Verizon Wireless exclusive here in the U.S., so it’s time to check out those contract end-dates if you’re on another carrier and you plan to scoop up the latest pure Google smartphone.

AMD VS INTEL

It depends on processor generation,

486 and Prior, AMD had the cheaper chip, and since technology was essentially non-existant (compared to today, there was no MMX, SSE, 3DNOW etc.) there was no reason NOT to go with AMD other than popularity.

"Pentium" Era, AMD still had cheaper chips, and it wasn't until the Pentium MMX came out that AMD started to look bad, but given all of the problems the Pentium had with flop/div i'd say AMD was still the better choice.

"Pentium II" Era, Intel innovated here, they had the faster processors with the better technology. AMD had 3DNow, but that didn't really matter all that much...

"Pentium III" Era, I'd call it a draw, Intel and AMD had comprable processors (i guess a slight performance edge to intel), and only price gave AMD the edge, and even so, the price differnce wasn't all that much.

"Pentium 4" Era, AMD, totally AMD, First consumer 64 bit support (even if it's not useful, or complete), better quality, Hypertransport, and lower price totally blocked out that whole HyperThreading bullshit (and it was some plain old bullshit)

Dual Core Era, Intel. Despite Intel's dual core processor being two cores on one die (where as AMD has two totally independent cores) intel beat AMD to the market by at least 6 months.

Quad Core Era (ie: now), Intel. one word: Phenom (totally sucks shit...)

Of course, that doesn't take into account mobile, server and budget machines, places i think AMD does well in most of the time.

As much as i love AMD for being cheap, and the honest to goodness better processor (any AMD with the same clock speed as a same generation Intel will beat it hands down), they have failed recently due to their inability to put out a product that is quality.

AMD needs to start putting more cache memory on their chips, they have always had less than their intel's counterpart, but when the rival's top end in rocking 12mb L2, and you're rocking 2mb L2 (and a 2mb L3) then there's a problem here.

When the next generation comes (that would be the 6/12 core generation) we'll (hopefully) see a tie again, from what i can tell both Intel and AMD have a 6 core processor roadmapped within 1 month of the other, both look great on paper, but until real world performance is benchmarked it's impossible to call a winner.

So in short:
Single Core: AMD
Dual Core: Intel
Quad Core: Intel

While AMD may be cheaper, performance is key, i'd rather pay more for a workhorse. (unless i'm looking for a cheap computer)

System Requirements

  • 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit Processor
  • 1GB of RAM (2GBs for 64-bit)
  • 16GB Available Hard Drive Space (20GBs for 64-bit)
  • DirectX 9-enabled GPU
Obviously, to reap the benefits of many of Windows 7’s other features, higher performance machines are required. If you’re not sure what kind of gear your PC is running but still want to get Windows 7, Microsoft has created a small evaluation program for determining whether you machine is capable of running Windows 7, which can be downloaded directly from Microsoft’s official download center.
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor will also tell you whether or not you will be able to upgrade your existing OS to Windows 7 or be required to do a fresh install, which will remove all of your preexisting files and settings. If you’d like to find out without having to install the software, Microsoft released an upgrade chart viewable here.

Whats New?

windows-7-screenshots
Many of the features of Windows 7 are improvements on the core framework of Windows Vista, but what features are new to Windows 7? Check out the most notable additions below:
  • New Windows Taskbar: Now, it feels and behaves a lot more like Mac OS X’s dock.
  • Jump Lists: Context-sensitive menus which are available for each program in your Taskbar and your Start Menu
  • Unified Search: The old Start Menu gains a greater amount of utility in Windows 7.
  • Fewer Annoying Popups: Remember the famously intrusive UAC system in Vista?
  • Device Stage: gives you a single window for interacting with your various gadgets

Better than Vista?

Most reviewers made the inevitable comparison to Microsoft’s last operating system, Vista, which was widely considered a dud. And, most reviewers were happy to announce that Windows 7 is a big improvement over its predecessor. “The first thing you’ll notice about Windows 7 is that it looks like Vista,” writes the Guardian. “It also works like Vista, in the sense that it has the same plumbing underneath, except for a very welcome graphics upgrade to DX11. However, it works much better than Vista, and most of Vista’s annoyances have either been removed, or (mostly) can be changed so the system works the way you like. It takes personalisation to extremes.”

Cleaner look

windows-7

“Windows 7 introduces real advances in organizing your programs and files, arranging your taskbar and desktop, and quickly viewing and launching the page or document you want, when you want it,” says The Wall Street Journal. “It also has cool built-in touch-screen features. It removes a lot of clutter. And it mostly banishes Vista’s main flaws—sluggishness; incompatibility with third-party software and hardware; heavy hardware requirements; and constant, annoying security warnings.”

Speed test

speedtest“Windows 7 feels faster than Windows XP and Vista, but it turns out that’s not always the case–sometimes, it’s the slowest out of the three operating systems,” reports CNET. “As you can see in the chart, we found that Windows 7 RTM was the fastest to shutdown, and was tied with XP for iTunes encoding. However, it was slower than XP and Vista for both booting up cold by a bit more than 1 second, and slower than either of its predecessors in its Microsoft Office performance.”

Compatibility with old software and hardware

entertainmentEngadget maintains a Windows 7 upgrade guide, but in their review they say that “anything we found to work in Vista seemed to work just fine (in some cases better!) in Windows 7. That goes for hardware and software, but of course the real test will be when this OS is unleashed upon the masses — your mom’s brother’s 25 year old printer might not make the cut, and we’ll be sure to pour out a 40 upon its behalf. In truth, Microsoft does a very good job with keeping a truly insane quantity of hardware and drivers and vendors happy, but we still think they could do better.”

Compatibility with Drivers

gears“With the Big Day just days away, expect to see a plethora of announcements from Windows hardware manufacturers about the availability of drivers for Windows 7,” says Driver Detective. Microsoft has addressed the issue of driver compatibility with Windows 7 by requiring all Vista-certified hardware manufacturers to provide Microsoft with compatibility metrics for Windows 7. Those drivers that don’t pass muster on the first blush must be made Windows 7 compatible by the time the new OS is released if the manufacturers wish to retain Vista certification.

Is there any Windows 7 Activation Hack?

“The first crack for Windows 7 RTM Build 6.1.7600.16385 had a short life time span and Microsoft made certain of this aspect,” says Softpedia. The Redmond company revealed that it had worked with Lenovo, the original equipment manufacturer that contributed to the activation circumventing of Windows 7 RTM by leaking the OEM SLP Master Product Key that served as the backbone of the hack, in order to hinder future attempts to bypass the activation and validation process associated with the latest iteration of the Windows client, via this method. The Redmond company indicated that it had blacklisted the special product key issued to Lenovo for the OEM-SLP (System-Locked Preinstallation) of the gold bits of Windows 7.
Sorry Guys Right not there is no Patch available to Activate your Beta copy of Windows 7 :(

The final word

Windows7ultimate“Windows XP was a great OS in its day. Windows Vista, once it found its feet several months in, was a good OS. With Windows 7, the OS is great again,” concludes Gizmodo. “It’s what people said they wanted out of Windows: Solid, more nimble and the easiest, prettiest Windows yet. There’s always a chance this won’t be a huge hit come October, given the economy and the state of the PC industry, but it’s exactly what Microsoft needs right now. Something people can grab without fear.”

Reuters reminds us that, “Like Windows 7, Vista got good reviews too: As Microsoft Corp’s Windows 7 release approaches, early reviews are generally positive. But so were reviews for Windows Vista just before its launch…. Vista got high marks before its release as well, with writers back then praising a new visual design — and glossing over quirks that later became common gripes.”

Keyboard Shortcuts for Ubuntu

For those who are not familiar with Linux, Ubuntu is one of the most popular and most widely used Linux distributions.
Over the years that I have used Ubuntu, other than the usual Ctrl + C (copy) and Ctrl + V (paste) shortcuts, I have discovered quite a number of keyboard shortcuts that are very useful, but seldom used by many. If you are looking for more keyboard shortcuts to add to your collection, I am sure you will be able to find some new tricks here.

1. Switch to the next/previous workspace

If you make use of the workspace very frequently, you can easily switch between different workspaces by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Left/Right Arrow. The Left key brings you to the previous workspace while the Right key brings you to the next adjacent. If you have enabled Compiz, you can even get it to show all the workspace by pressing Super + E on the keyboard.

2. Move the current window to another workspace

By pressing Shift+ Ctrl + Alt + Left/Right Arrow, you can easily move your current window to another workspace in the specified direction. This keyboard shortcut works very well with the one mentioned above. If you have the habit of opening many applications/windows when doing your work, but don’t like to see your desktop and menubar cluttered with all the application windows, you can use this shortcut key to move your applications to another workspace and get your desktop organized.

3. Show the desktop

Ctrl + Alt + D enables you to quickly minimize all windows and give focus to the desktop. When all windows are minimized, this shortcut can also maximize all the windows to their previous state.

4. Keyboard shortcut for the mouse right-click

In most applications, you can always right-click on the mouse to access the options menu. On the keyboard, you can simply press Shift + F10 to achieve this ‘right-click‘ effect

5. Restart session and recover from crashes

There are very few instances where Ubuntu will crash totally. But if it does, you can press Ctrl + Alt + Backspace to restart the session, and 90% of the time, it will recover from the crashes.

6. Lock the screen quickly

If you need to leave your workstation for a while, you can quickly lock up your screen by pressing Ctrl + Alt + L and prevent unauthorized access by others.

7. Switch between windows in the reverse direction

Alt + Tab is a common shortcut key that allow you to switch between open windows. But do you know that by including the ‘Shift‘ button, you can reverse the windows switching direction? This is useful when you press Alt + Tab too fast and passed the window that you want to switch to. Simply press down the ‘Shift‘ button to go back to the previous window in the switch cycle.

8. Move windows with arrow keys

Press Alt+F7 to activate the Move window function and use any arrows key (up, down, left, right) to move the window around the screen.

9. Show hidden files

Most of the time, you won’t need to view the hidden files in your home folder, but in the event that you need to, you can press Ctrl + H inside the Nautilus (the file manager for Ubuntu) to show all hidden files.

10. Show file properties without right-clicking the mouse

The conventional way to view a file/folder properties is to right-click the mouse and select ‘Properties‘. Now you can just press Alt + Enter to get the Properties window to appear.

Speed up firefox

forevergeek.com has a useful guide on speeding up firefox for broadband users. basically after getting to the hidden config settings you set the browser to request more data that it usually does.

1.Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages MUCH faster now!
